The Goodwood Festival of Speed takes place this weekend, and every year the Earl of March, who manages the 12,000-acre Goodwood estate that hosts the event, commissions a giant art piece honoring that year’s featured marque. Audi is the featured marque this year, which is timely since the Ingolstadt-based automaker is also celebrating its centennial.

This year’s sculpture that was commissioned for Audi is a big swoosh of tire tracks with a 1937 Auto Union streamliner and new Audi R8 V10 suspended at either end. Standing 135-feet tall and weighing 40 tonnes, as they say in Britain, the piece is made entirely of steel to support itself without braces or cables. Gerry Judah is the designer, as he has been for Goodwood’s featured art installations since 1997 when he first designed one for Ferrari. This is also the second time he’s produced a piece for Audi, the first one being back in 1999.

It goes without saying that we all want to stick this in the flower bed in our front yard, but unfortunately you’ll only be able to see it if you’re in West Sussex this weekend to enjoy the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Check out more pics of this year’s Audi sculpture, as well as art pieces from prior years, in the gallery below.

We didn’t much care for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen when we went out and saw it on opening night, but we’re still smitten by the concept of robots that transform into all manner of vehicular machinery. In Michael Bay’s new flick, motorcycles may have taken a more prominent role than in the past, but we prefer the classic Norton Commando in the short clip after the break to the two-wheeled robotic movie machines.

Composed and rendered by Steve Twist, a student from Bournemouth University gunning for his undergraduate degree in Computer Visualisation and Animation, this eight-month project looks to be time well spent to our eyes. Better still, in our heads, this is exactly what an old Norton motorcycle would sound like if it could talk.

Perhaps Twist can get in touch with Bay to instill at least a modicum of realism for the inevitable Transformers 3? Nah, probably not. Click past the break to watch the video.

Now here’s just the thing to mix up with a heated-up Flattie, or better yet, a Rajo Model T powerplant, which would be perfectly authentic for the vintage. Oh sure, purists will argue that this artifact, which apparently started life as a Hariss Steam Car prototype carrying a Stanley Steamer power unit, should be returned to its original state. Good luck figuring out exactly what that was.

With a deft enough touch, you could pay homage to the 1930s craftsmanship in this vehicle without ruining it. Either way, if you’re determined enough to buy this obviously Stout Scarab-inspired vehicle (it currently has one bid at $8,500) it will be yours to do whatever you choose, critics be damned. Going all Travels With Charley with this split-window behemoth, especially towing a homebuilt teardrop trailer, would be a fantastic summer diversion, and if you did go all external-combustion-engine on it, you’d always have a fire to sit around at night.

Autoblog went to the premiere of Raptor - Born in Baja, and while the film is on the long side, it’s an enjoyable flick. We wrote before that the truck “only” came in third (out of four total trucks in Class 8), but to finish the Baja 1000 at all is an achievement — especially when the overall attrition rate is close to 50%. Throw in a truck that had been built in three months and hadn’t been tested in any other race before and you’ve got a little adventure on your hands.

The movie provides plenty more. There’s never a good time for things to break, but the Raptor R chose a couple of the most abysmal moments to get sick: it was compelling irony to watch the whole race team wearing “Built Ford Tough” t-shirts gathered around a truck that wouldn’t start 90 minutes before the race began.

And if it wasn’t the Raptor, it was other trucks in the road holding things up. Still, not only did they get it started, but the Raptor R got to the end with all of its panels and, as far as we could see, no dents — and it came within minutes of taking second place.

But you’ll have to watch the movie to truly glimpse the eye of the tiger… and the thrill of the fight. You can view it on Speed TV on Sunday, July 12 at 4 p.m. EST — and when you do, look for Pickuptrucks.com’s Mike Levine, Jalopnik’s Ray Wert, and our own Drew Phillips who make cameos during the SEMA coverage.

General Motors‘ pending deal to offload its unwanted HUMMER brand may have hit a major snag. Although no official word has come from the Ministry of Commerce or the National Development and Reform Commission, state-run radio organizations are reporting that the Chinese government will indeed block the sale of HUMMER from GM to Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co. It’s impossible to know exactly how this whole mess will play out, but these reports clearly jive with the general sentiments we’ve been hearing since the deal was first announced.

According to Chinese radio reports (via the BBC), there are two main objections to the HUMMER deal. First, the brand’s environmental credentials don’t match up with the direction the Chinese government wants its automakers to head. Second, there are questions as to whether Tengzhong has the expertise to properly manage a large automaker as it’s business dealings so far have all been in the construction equipment segment.

Not so fast, says Tengzhong. In a newly-released statement regarding these latest reports, the company had this to say:

Some people may have views and speculation, but the Chinese government has a process that we respect… The view expressed on China National Radio’s website did not quote or source anyone at NDRC. We do not yet have a definitive agreement, but are developing our proposals with GM and Hummer and we will continue to engage with the appropriate authorities in an appropriate manner.

At this point, it seems equally as possible that a decision could either come down in short order or come only after a long series of protracted negotiations. Stay tuned. Thanks for the tip, Dave S!

Late last year at the Intermot show in Germany, Honda pulled the covers off a radical concept motorcycle it promised would soon enter production powered by a powerful new V4 engine. The new bike’s introduction is obviously close at hand as a new series of spy photos clearly shows the bike testing on the street.

Shortly before the bike was spied out and about in the real world, Motorcycle News in the U.K. managed to acquire a series of leaked images of the new bike in what appears to be production-ready form. From these shots, we can tell that the new Honda will feature relaxed sportbike geometry with an upright seating position, a single-sided shaft-drive swingarm and a Cylon-like single front headlamp flanked by twin ram air ducts.

Current speculation is that this new bike will be known as the VFR1200 and be equipped a new V4 engine that will put out close to 200 horsepower. That powerplant will supposedly feature Variable Cylinder Management, which will be capable of running on two of the four cylinders in order to save fuel when maximum power isn’t necessary. It seems likely that Honda will officially debut the bike later this year with sales planned for early 2010.

We played with Transformers as kids and have a considerable appetite for anything automotive, making the second installment of the Transformers film franchise a must watch in an otherwise uninspiring summer blockbuster season. While we didn’t dare hope for a compelling story line, we were pretty sure Director Michael Bay wouldn’t let us down with regards to special effects. We hit the theater to see if Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen lived up to the considerable hype, and basically got exactly what we expected. Hit the jump to check out our brief review.

We have no idea why Michael A. Salter wanted to create a race car out of polystyrene packing waste, and we guess it doesn’t matter — he did, and this is the result. We don’t have much any information on the single-seater open-wheeler other than that it’s on display at the John Ross Plaza Studio in Portland, Oregon. However, we did find out that Salter is “known internationally for his wry polystyrene packaging sculptures dubbed ‘Styrobots’,” and the styrobots are just as cool as this car which you can check out in the gallery below.

According to sources at The New York Times, General Motors‘ Hummer division has been sold to a machinery company in western China. That company, Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Company Ltd., presently doesn’t build automobiles, it is known for making construction and maintenance equipment, but more recently it has segued into heavy-duty trucks.

The NYT says that the memorandum of understanding between GM and Sichuan Tengzhong needs to be signed off on by Beijing officials, as the government has the discretion to veto any purchases of overseas firms by a Chinese company, particularly those transactions valued over $100 million. Hummer’s final price
